The New Cue talked to the "psychedelia-lovin' Texans" about putting their last album 'Mordechai' in the middle of the pandemic and not being able to play it in front of people: "It was really hard. We had to do it. We had the music ready and there was no reason not to put it out. It 100% should have gone out. But it was really hard not to be together. It was hard not to know how people were really feeling about it and digesting it. And it was hard to have so much time to read [people talking about it on] the internet". They have a 'Mordechai' remixes album out. They really liked what they got back from the remixers: "I really appreciate freedom when I create. I think it works better when you give artists permission to do whatever they want. They're going to end up doing their best work".

Keep calm and listen to Mordechai

Khruangbin - this year's vinyl sensation

Among the fifty best-selling records of August on Discogs.com, three of the top five entries were just different vinyl pressings of Khruangbin's 'Mordechai'including the top spot. In all, six of the top fifty best-selling records were by Khruangbin, topping both current hot acts such as Phoebe Bridgers and catalog titles like David Bowie. It goes down to music of course 'Mordechai' is a “record that is fun and full of heart, and also really calming", Hannah Carlen, head of marketing at Khruangbin’s label, Dead Oceans, told Texas Monthly.

Braids

A fun new song 'Pelota' by the psych-trio Khruangbin; 'Dreams' by Hannas Georgas is a simple, almost cold, albeit full-hearted song produced by The National's Aaron Dessner; Braids 'Snow Angel' is elegiac and threatening, a pearl!; J Cole's 'Snow On Tha Bluff' addresses the issue of Black Lives Matter protests (supposedly he's aiming at activist and rapper NoName); Idles' new song 'Grounds' features a big beat and a big riff.

Khruangbin

'So You Won’t Forget' is a new Khruangbin song from their forthcoming album 'Mordechai', slightly less world music, slightly more funk, a summer breeze song; Compton rapper Problem's 'Janet Freestyle' is a tribute to his friend Nipsey Hussle, it samples Janet Jackson, and features jazz musician/Kendrick Lamar collaborator Terrace Martin; Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante and Suicidal Tendencies bassist Ra Diaz covered Billie Eilish's 'Bad Guy' - that would have happened had her brother been a metalhead; metalcore outfit Misery Signals play tense and dense on 'The Tempest'; American Trappist go psych-rocky on 'Losing My Grip'; Slowthai is back with yet another new song, 'BB (BodyBag)', he's still pretty much angry; Apollo Brown & Che’ Noir feature Black Thought on soul-heavy 'Hustle Don’t Give'; dark-pop newcomer Daine sounds like a polished Billie Eilish on her debut single 'Picking Flowers'.

Avishai Cohen

Avishai Cohen the trumpet player (not Avishai Cohen, the bass player) released a mesmerizing cover of 'Teardrop', a jazzy, post-rocky take on the classic; Khruangbin announced new album 'Mordechai' - influenced by reference sounds from Pakistan, Korea and West Africa - with the lead single ‘Time (You and I)’; Rufus Wainwright's 'Alone Time' is warm and rich in its simplicity; Bristol singer-songwriter Fenne Lily's new single 'To Be a Woman Pt. 2' is a "retaliation against subordination and a reclamation of power"; experimental musician serpentwithfeet is back with 'Apparition', an arty R'n'B EP; BadBadNotGood released two new songs - an R'n'B-ish 'Goodbye Blue', and jazzy 'Glide'; singer Amber Mark goes into male-female interaction in clubs in '1894'; London singer/songwriter Eve Owen has built, in collaboration with The National's Aaron Dessner, a big-sounding song 'Mother'; Samia released a folk song 'Is There Something In The Movies', with a cinematic video to go with; Thom Yorke released his new song 'Plasticine Figures', a piano ballad.

Wu-Tang Clan headlined the final night of Desert Daze on Sunday (10/13), and as a surprise for the crowd they brought out Texas psych-funk Khruangbin, to back them on 'Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off)', Stereogum reports. The trio is known to throw a medley tribute to ’90s hip hop into their sets. Turned up […]
