St. Vincent and The Roots performed a beautiful cover of Portishead‘s ‘Glory Box’ on The Tonight Show on Wednesday (Intl Women's Day). The atmospheric collaboration, faithful to the original 1995 single, saw St. Vincent deliver a powerful and haunting vocal, with her own spin on the song’s electrifying guitar solo. The Tonight Show house band The Roots accompanied her with subtle instrumentation, whereas a live string section gave a final touch.

Longtime member of the Roots, Leonard Nelson “Hub” Hubbard, has died at age 62 from multiple myeloma, The Philadelphia Enquirer reports. Hub joined the Roots in 1992, has played on a string of early Roots albums, and had left the Roots following his 2007 cancer diagnosis. Hub co-wrote and arranged a number of Roots compositions, and performed as a member of the live band during his 15-year tenure. He also played with the Roots in 2001, when they supported Jay-Z during his MTV Unplugged concert, which was later released as a live album.

Malik B, the rapper who was a co-founding member of the Roots and appeared on their first four LPs, has died at the age of 47. The Roots’ Questlove and Black Thought said in a statement - “May he be remembered for his devotion to Islam, his loving brotherhood, and his innovation as one of the most gifted MCs of all time". Malik B. was the co-founding member of the band, he left the Roots at the turn of the millennium, due to drug issues, but he continued to make guest appearances on the group’s albums. Black Thought shared his warmhearted sentiment: “Your steel sharpened my steel as I watched you create cadences from the ether and set them free into the universe to become poetic law, making the English language your b****. I always wanted to change you, to somehow sophisticate your outlook and make you see that there were far more options than the streets, only to realize that you and the streets were one... and there was no way to separate a man from his true self”.

The Roots and Michelle Obama are hosting a virtual festival on June 27, with a lineup featuring The Roots, SZA, Roddy Ricch, Lil Baby, Kirk Franklin, H.E.R., G Herbo, Earthgang, Polo G, DJ D-Nice, Snoh Aalegra, and Musiq Soulchild, CNN reports. Various non-musical guests will make appearances as well (no word on Barack Obama yet). The virtual fest, organized through When We All Vote as the 13th annual Roots Picnic, can be watched via the Roots’ YouTube page.

Jimmy Fallon has gathered a dozen artists for the latest edition of his "classroom instruments" segment for an elaborate virtual performance of Bowie/Queen song 'Under Pressure'. Tonight Show host, Panic at the Disco's Brendon Urie and The Roots covered the ‘80s classic with (mostly) home “home instruments" - Questlove played the butter knife/wine glass, bottle, jar and bowl, Black Thought worked the frosting spatula and toaster, and Dave Guy was on frisbee - and the song turned out GRRREAT!!! Philadelphia City Council has renamed the East Passyunk Avenue (between South Street and Bainbridge Street), to Avenue of The Roots. Band's drummer Questlove shared the news on Instagram and claimed the city made the decision to make the change recently but he thought the announcement would come later in May - “Cats was like “NOAP!!! WE FINNA PUT THIS JAWN UP NOW!!!!!”.
