St. Vincent and The Roots performed a beautiful cover of Portishead‘s ‘Glory Box’ on The Tonight Show on Wednesday (Intl Women's Day). The atmospheric collaboration, faithful to the original 1995 single, saw St. Vincent deliver a powerful and haunting vocal, with her own spin on the song’s electrifying guitar solo. The Tonight Show house band The Roots accompanied her with subtle instrumentation, whereas a live string section gave a final touch.

“What began as a straightforward glimpse into an artist’s life and career gradually morphed into something altogether different – and strange” - the press release for 'The Nowhere Inn', starring St. Vincent, Carrie Brownstein, and Dakota Johnson, reads. Directed by Bill Benz, the metafictional film features the stars portraying fictional versions of themselves out to make a documentary about the provocateur otherwise known as Annie Clark (St. Vincent of course). “You’re nerdy and normal in real life, but the disparity between that and who you are on stage as St. Vincent is jarring” - Brownstein says in the trailer, leading Clark to reply - “I can be St. Vincent all the time, so that I can be a little bit more interesting”.

St. Vincent has redone Metallica's 'Sad But True', adding a ton of sexy and cool, making for a surprisingly good cover. Jason Isbell goes a step further with the same song - himself and the 400 Unit reimagined 'The Black Album' classic as a thrilling country rock barn stomper. Both songs appear on Metallica’s upcoming collection, 'The Metallica Blacklist', a companion album celebrating the 30th anniversary of 'The Black Album'. Set for release digitally on September 10th and physically on October 1st, 'The Metallica Blacklist' also boasts contributions from Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan, J Balvin, Phoebe Bridgers, My Morning Jacket, Weezer, Mac DeMarco, Cage the Elephant, Kamasi Washington, Portugal. the Man, IDLES, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Moses Sumney.

New St. Vincent album 'Daddy's Home' sees her looking back at the early 70’s sound which is the music her father played her in her own youth, which makes for a full circle with her father coming out of prison recently (was there for 10 years for stock fraud). In her Consequence interview she talks about the music at the foundation of the album: "The music that was happening there in the early 70s, post the idealism of the flower children, pre the either nihilism or escapism of punk and disco, there was music that was this confluence of people telling it how it was lyrically, and all of this really great fusion of rock music but with jazz harmony into it, and funk in there and soul. It was just really secretly sophisticated, but utterly musical output". The album is out May 14.

Jane Weaver

St Vincent looks inside her family with her new album made while her father was getting out of prison (spent 9 years there for $43 million stock fraud), 'Pay Your Way In Pain' is the first glimpse into it; Duendita brings soul to a jazz band with 'Open Eyes'; steel pan player Fimber Bravo announces his new album with an afrobeat banger 'Hiyah Man'; 'Flock' is the stand-out track from Jane Weaver's new eclectic psych-pop album of the same name; this is just lovely - Suede's Brett Anderson and Nadine Shah cover Mercury Rev's 'Holes' with help from Paraorchestra, the world's first large-scale integrated virtuoso ensemble of professional disabled and non-disabled musicians; Maple Glider presents her great voice on 'Good Thing'; Julianknxx shares his activist hip-hop poetry on 'Basement'.

Satin Nickel

'Shadow of Doubt' by Satin Nickel is strange and great - prog-rock meets Americana; 'The Eddy' takes St. Vincent in an unseen jazz direction - the song is from ‘La La Land’ director Daniel Chazelle's new Netflix drama; singer, songwriter, and producer Ted When takes on isolation in 'The Edge'; Fontaines D.C. won't change rock with 'A Hero's Death', but it is a potent rock song; Rhye is going for the beautiful with her new song; Muse frontman Matt Bellamy is alone on 'Tomorrow's World', inspired by isolation on the piano-heavy, haunting song; Zeshan B mixes global music and soul in 'Only in my Dreams', a song that came to him in a dream.
