Zambian songwriter, rapper, and singer Sampa the Great in the latest episode of Song Exploder tells the story of her song 'Let Me Be Great'. Tame Impala, Sampa The Great, Amy Shark and Archie Roach were among the big winners at the 2020 ARIA Awards, with Kevin Parker's psychedelic pop band taking home five awards including best group and album of the year for 'The Slow Rush'. Sampa The Great made history in 2019 when she became the first woman of color to win the ARIA for best hip-hop release, this year - she got it again. African-Australian rapper Sampa the Great released her new video 'Time’s Up', a short song that deals with the way the music industry seeks to exploit Black art without supporting Black artists - “I seen the industry scheme / and it’s a killer”, Sampa says. Directed by Sampa’s longtime collaborator Sanjay De Silva, it culminates with a sequence that features "an impeccably well-timed usage" of the ARIA Award that Sampa won last year.

Melbourne-based hip-hop artist Sampa the Great won the Australian music prize yesterday with her album 'The Return', two years after she first won the award for 2017 album 'Birds and the BEE9', making her the first artist in the history to win the Australian music prize twice, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. Zambian-born Sampa Tembo thanked the judging panel for recognising an album “not written for radio play or commercial appeal”, the Music Network reports. The album deals with themes of migration and displacement. Sampa’s album beat out a shortlist that included recordings by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Thelma Plum, Amyl & the Sniffers and more. Previous winners of the AMP include Gurrumul, Augie March, Courtney Barnett and AB Original.
