Commentary: Women own the American Country Music Awards

"Though female country stars didn’t compete for the night’s top prize – Luke Bryan was named entertainer of the year – they owned Sunday’s ACM Awards" - Denver Post argues about the nature of last night's ceremony. "Carrie Underwood brought the Academy of Country Music Awards to church. Maren Morris won two honors, including song of the year. Miranda Lambert performed three times and held onto her record as the most decorated winner in ACM history. And Mickey Guyton, the first Black woman to host the awards show, gave a powerful, top-notch vocal performance".

Puerto Rican star was the big winner at the Latin American Music Awards, taking home five awards including artist of the year, album of the year for 'YHLQMDLG' and favorite male artist. Bad Bunny was followed by Karol G and Nicki Minaj who took three awards each including song of the year thanks to global hit 'Tusa', Hola! USA reports. Check out all the nominees and winners here.

Dua Lipa / Celeste / Arlo Parks

Dua Lipa, Arlo Parks, Celeste, Joel Corry and Young T & Bugsey lead Brit Awards 2021 nominations with three noms apiece. The British album category also features four out of five female nominees for the first time in Brits history, with the aforementioned women joined by Jessie Ware and J Hus. Also, more than half the nominees in key categories are non-white, making the most diverse nominations in the event's history, as Sky emphasizes. Alexis Petridis points out that - "by recognising UK rap and women’s creativity, the Brits are finally in tune".

Taylor Swift and Beyonce make Grammy history

Taylor Swift has become the first woman in Grammy Awards history to win album of the year three times - the 31-year-old songstress took home the top prize last night with 'Folklore'. Swift previously won album of the year in 2010 for 'Fearless', at that time, the youngest artist ever to do so, and in 2016 for '1989'. The only other musicians to win thrice are Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, and Paul Simon, USA Today reports. Beyoncé became the most-decorated woman in Grammys history with her 28th win, while her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, at 9 years old, became the second youngest person to win a Grammy, according to CBS News. Billie Eilish accepted the Grammy for Record of the Year for her song 'Everything I Wanted', Megan Thee Stallion won Best New Artist, H.E.R. took Song of the Year for 'I Can't Breathe', Check out all the nominees and winners here. Fiona Apple / Thundercat / Kaytranada

Apart from the biggest categories, there were some noticeable wins at the Grammys last night. Kaytranada won Best Dance/Electronic Album with 'Bubba', Fiona Apple won Best Rock Performance with 'Shameika' as well as Best Alternative Music Album with 'Fetch the Bolt Cutters', Brittany Howard won Best Rock Song with 'Stay High', The Strokes won Best Rock Album with 'The New Abnormal', Thundercat won Best Progressive R&B Album with 'It Is What It Is', Gillian Welch & David Rawlings won Best Folk Album with 'All The Good Times', Burna Boy won Best Global Music Album with 'Twice As Tall', Body Count won Best Metal Performance with 'Bum-Rush', even Kanye West won, in Best Contemporary Christian Music Album category with 'Jesus is King', tying Jay-Z as the most ever Grammy-awarded among hip-hop artists with 22 awards.

The Weeknd / Jessie Reyez / Kaytranada

The Weeknd has six nominations for Juno Awards 2021, including nods for Album of the Year, Single of the Year and Artist of the Year. Jessie Reyez, JP Saxe and Justin Bieber each follow closely behind with five nominations each. Also nominated are Savannah Ré, Arkells, TOBi, Half Moon Run, the Glorious Sons, Alanis Morissette, Shay Lia, Kaytranada, WondaGurl, Murda Beatz, Alessia Cara, Crown Lands, Céline Dion, Leonard Cohen, NAV and Shawn Mendes.

Electronic duo The Avalanches have won the 2020 Australian Music Prize for their album ‘We Will Always Love You’, uDiscover Music reports. The Avalanches were nominated next to Tame Impala’s ‘The Slow Rush’, Ziggy Ramo’s ‘Black Thoughts’, ‘Nyaaringu’ by Miiesha, Alice Ivy’s ‘Don’t Sleep’, Blake Scott’s ‘Niscitam’, Emma Donovan and the Putbacks’ ‘Crossover’, Fanny Lumsden’s ‘Fallow’ and Gordon Koang’s ‘Unity’. Previous winners of the Australian Music Prize include Sampa The Great, Gurrumul, A.B. Original, Courtney Barnett, and The Drones.

SOCAN Foundation announced winners of the first-ever Black Canadian Music Awards, which aims to "recognize and celebrate the artistic merit demonstrated by Black music creators (songwriters, composers, producers, etc.) in all genres". The winners are: rapper and singer TOBi; rapper Naya Ali started music as a 2-year old, now she's known for her flamboyant flow; RAAHiiM is a new Canadian R'n'B singer; Hunnah started singing in her church at age 4, now she writes and produces her own music; Dylan Sinclair brought his R'n'B to LA. All the winners each receive a $5,000 prize.

Recording Academy has revealed the recipients of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards - Talking Heads, Selena, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, opera singer Marilyn Horne, and late jazz great Lionel Hampton will all receive the Special Merit gramophones, Variety reports.

The Highwomen

Country super-group The Highwomen were the big winners at the 19th annual Americana Honors & Awards, taking home album of the year accolade for their eponymous debut, song of the year for 'Crowded Table', and duo/group of the year. John Prine, who died in April 2020 at age 73, won artist of the year while Black Pumas won emerging act of the year.

Grammys change name of world music album category

American Recording Academy is changing the name of its best world music album category to best global music album, reflecting a change, rather an evolution in the world. The renamed Grammy will be announced on November 24 and given in February 2021. The Academy sees the new term as "a more relevant, modern, and inclusive", symbolizing "a departure from the connotations of colonialism, folk, and ‘non-American’ that the former term embodied while adapting to current listening trends and cultural evolution among the diverse communities it may represent”, Billboard reports. This year's Best World Music Album winner was Celia Angelique's 'Kidjo'.

Megan Thee Stallion was the big winner at the 15th annual BET Hip Hop Awards taking home three awards -- hip-hop artist of the year, best collaboration (for 'Savage' with Beyonce) and hustler of the year. Rapsody became the first woman to win for lyricist of the year. Roddy Ricch’s 'Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial' won hip hop album of the year, the first time that an artist’s first studio album has won that award. Avant-garde rapper Backxwash has won the 2020 Polaris Music Prize for her album 'God Has Nothing to Do With This Leave Him Out of It'. Backxwash, the stage name of performer Ashanti Mutinta, blends gothic elements of rap and metal music with her own personal experiences with faith, family and her queer identity. Also nominated were Caribou, Junia-T, Kaytranada, nêhiyawak, Pantayo, Lido Pimienta, Jessie Reyez, U.S. Girls, and Witch Prophet.

Lime Cordiale

Australian indie-pop band Lime Cordiale leads the pack for the 2020 ARIA Awards with eight nominations for their album '14 Steps to a Better You', including nods for album of the year and best group. Tame Impala is up for seven ARIAs with 'The Slow Rush', including a nod for album of the year. Hip-hop artist Sampa The Great is in the running for six ARIAs for her debut album 'The Return'. Also, among the nominees are Indigenous artist Miiesha, Britpop revivalists DMA’s, rockers Violent Soho, as well as Ruel, Amy Shark, Archie Roach, Jessica Mauboy, The Teskey Brothers, Tones and I, Troye Sivan, Cold Chisel, The Kid LAROI, Baker Boy and others.

The 2020 short list for the Polaris Music Prize has been officially unveiled, with 10 albums for the Canadian music prize whittled down from a 40 albums list. One grand prize of $50,000 will be awarded on October 19. The other short list contenders will receive prizes of $3,000 each.

Julia Jacklin / Tones And I / Sampa the Great

Tones And I has three nominations for 2020 AIR Awards - her international hit 'Dance Monkey' is up for independent song of the year, her debut EP 'The Kids are Coming' is in the running for independent pop album or EP and she’s nominated for breakthrough independent artist of the year. Australian Music Prize winner Sampa The Great is nominated in three categories as well as Julia Jacklin and Stella Donnelly, Scenestr reports. Scoring multiple chances for this year’s ceremony is Flume, Angie McMahon, Stella Donnelly, The Teskey Brothers, Ainslie Wills and more, while Nick Cave, Cub Sport, Pnau, Confidence Man and Paul Kelly are among the big names with one nomination.
