Michael Azerrad: My time with Kurt Cobain

A beautiful article in the New Yorker by Michael Azerrad, a journalist and one of Kurt Cobain's closest friends: "That’s the kind of thing that haunts people who know people who have committed suicide: Is there something I could have done? Twenty-seven years later, I still ask myself that question. I tried, but perhaps I could have—and should have—tried harder. The thing is, although I was in my early thirties, I was still immature and naïve. Maybe I wasn’t so well suited to the task". The long read also gives quite a convincing albeit prosaic explanation for the suicide: "Kurt had several clinically established risk factors for suicide, including inhuman levels of professional pressure, chronic and severe physical pain, and a heroin addiction that he just couldn’t seem to shake (or didn’t want to). He also had a long family history of suicide".

Kurt Cobain's hair is being auctioned off

Six strands of Kurt Cobain's hair are being auctioned as part of Iconic Auctions' 'The Amazing Music Auction', Loudwire reports. This one-of-a-kind artifact is "accompanied by an impeccable lineage of provenance including photos of Kurt posing with the woman who cut this hair, scissors in hand, and a fantastic shot of the hair actually being cut! The lucky friend who trimmed the Nirvana frontman's iconic blond locks was an early confidant, Tessa Osbourne, who cut his hair in 1989 — well prior to his 'Nevermind' breakthrough — while on the 'Bleach' tour", the press statement reads. The bidding started at $2,500.

Two of Kurt Cobain’s smashed Fender guitars sold for a combined $281,600 at an auction, Rolling Stone reports. Bob Marley’s first guitar earned $153,600 at Icons & Idols Trilogy: Rock ‘n’ Roll Auction, while three guitars once belonging to the late Eddie Van Halen have sold for a combined $422,000. The instruments were sold as part of a celebrity auction where nearly 900 items were offered, including items once owned by Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, and more.

Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged guitar sells for $6 million

The retro acoustic-electric 1959 Martin D-18E guitar played by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in a rare acoustic concert has sold for a record $6 million, CNN reports. Cobain played the guitar during a legendary MTV Unplugged performance in 1993, just five months before he died. At $6.01m after fees, the guitar is the most expensive ever sold at auction. It was bought by Rode Microphones founder Peter Freedman who said "I didn't even buy it for me. I paid for it but I'm going to use it to highlight the plight of artists worldwide by touring it around and then I'm going to sell it and use the dough for that as well, later".

The photo of Kurt Cobain's head among dolls and in front of wilted flowers "distilled what this work is about for me: trying to interpret as closely as I can who my subject is, while at the same time staying loyal to my point of view. Marrying those two things is always the starting point" -  Mark Seliger told Guardian about his favorite photo. This shot is on sale as part of Christie's online auction in aid of charities combatting Covid-19 (bids close on 12 June), along with photos of Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, Johnny Cash, U2, Jennifer Lopez...

The storage compartment contains Cobain’s half-used pack of guitar strings, picks and a suede “stash bag”.

Rolling Stone has a lovely nostalgic article about an "acrylic, mohair and Lycra blend cardigan" that Curt Kobain wore during Nirvana's MTV Unplugged performance and several times on tour with Nirvana before his death in April. It's originally from the 1960s, worth 16 dollars, but since this particular one has a history, it was sold at […]

A sweater worn by Kurt Cobain during the last photoshoot before his death went for $75,000 at an auction.
