Dave, Little Simz and Ghetts win MOBO awards

Dave took home best album awards for his second record, 'We're All Alone In This Together' at this year's Mobo Awards, NME reports. Rapper Little Simz won best female, in recognition of her triumphant third album, 'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert'. Ghetts took home best male Mobo. Central Cee was named best newcomer, while Nigeria's Wizkid was named best international act.

The third album by East London rapper "depicts honest tales of London through the art of true lyricism, a tradition that will never die out" - NME writes about Ghetts' 'Conflict of Interest', an album rich in lyrics and collaborations (and minutes - it's over an hour long). Alexis Petridis says the album "feels like the work of an artist who’s in it for the long haul rather than short-term rewards". Clash Music puts it simple: "His strongest album to date, and one of grime’s true classic".

Great new songs today: John Grant, Dessa, Ghetts...

John Grant

John Grant's 'The Only Baby' is long, angry, and - awesome!; Kikagaku Moyo release a fun psychedelia song 'Elevation Jam' from their new live album; Ghetts gets help from Stormzy for his new groovy track 'Skengman'; rapper Dessa stands against "global powers who stand to profit by stoking our basest vanities and appetites" on 'Rome'; French actress Isabelle Adjani covered Elvis Costello's 'Revolution #49'.

Guardian explored how fatherhood affected careers of male musicians, and how they dealt with it. UK rapper Ghetts says that when he had his daughter eight years ago, he “wasn’t as financially secure as I am now, so I panicked. It was like, ‘Wow, I’m going to be responsible for another human being.’ So it threw me into being more busy, if anything”. Similarly, Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard cites his breadwinner role - his children “get upset when I am about to go away”, but they “understand my job provides a good lifestyle for them where we have the things that we want”. As for logistics, Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne brought his newborn on tour, similar to Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, while Ghetts solves his fatherly duties by “speeding back during the night” after shows, and then “doing the school run in the morning”.
