Finneas makes a point

Expensive guitars don’t write better songs - Finneas wrote on his Twitter, making a good point (albeit an obvious one). Later he also tweeted "you ever see someone walking with headphones on and you can just tell they are feeling SO fresh because of whatever they’re listening to?", and "no music on a dead planet". In a less metaphysical moment, he remembered the late Linkin Park singer - "4 years. RIP Chester Bennington. Sad forever about this".

Billie Eilish's older brother Finneas O’Connell topped the list of the most successful artists on Spotify last year, Music Business Worldwide reports. Finneas wrote 50% of hits for his sister, as well as released music as an independent artist himself, and co-wrote/co-produced tracks released in 2020 by the likes of Demi Lovato, Celeste, Halsey, and Justin Bieber/Benny Blanco. The second-placed songwriter on Spotify last year is Kid Harpoon, who collaborated with Harry Styles on the latter’s double-platinum 'Fine Line' album.

Billie Eilish sweeps the Grammys - becomes the first woman to win the big four awards in one night

Billie Eilish became the first woman in Grammy history to sweep the Big Four awards: album, record and song of the year plus best new artist. The first artist ever to win the big four awards was Christopher Cross 39 years ago. Eilish took album of the year for her debut, 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?', becoming the youngest album of the year winner in Grammy history (she is 18), easily topping Taylor Swift, who was 20 when she won a decade ago for 'Fearless'. She's also the youngest record of the year winner, with 'Bad Guy', in Grammy history - before her, the youngest were Kimbra and Sam Smith (both were 22 when they won). Also, Eilish's collaborator and older brother Finneas (22), is the youngest winner of producer of the year, non-classical in the category's history. Lizzo took best urban contemporary album for 'Cuz I Love You (Deluxe)', Tyler, the Creator's 'Igor' won best rap album, The Chemical Brothers' 'No Geography' won best dance/electronic album, Cage the Elephant took best rock album with 'Social Cues', Vampire Weekend took best alternative music album with 'Father of the Bride', the late Nipsey Hussle won his first Grammy for best rap performance for 'Racks in the Middle', Tool won best metal performance for '7empest', Beyoncé's 'Homecoming' won best music film, former First Lady Michelle Obama's 'Becoming' won best spoken word record...

Billie Eilish’s 'When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?' was produced by her brother Finneas, and he also co-wrote 12 of its 14 tracks with Eilish, while penning the other two on his own. When asked about the songwriters that have inspired him he answered thusly - "I have always loved Ben Folds, he's like an idol of mine, a hero of mine. The last couple years I've been really obsessed with Sara Bareilles. I just think she is, bar for bar, unbelievable at her songwriting... I've always loved Bill Withers. I've always loved John Mayer. And then, you know, I grew up on a lot of bands. So, The Strokes, Julian Casablancas' lyrics have always inspired me. I've always been inspired by My Chemical Romance's lyrics and melodies". Next thing for him? - a solo album.

NME made a list of 100 new artists, "set to take over 2020 and the next decade". Some are already known, like the eclectic 100 gecs, spoken word indie band Black Country, New Road, soul singer Celeste, Billie Eilish's brother Finneas, Ariana Grande writer Victoria Monét, and some less so.
