German composer Volker Bertelmann. also known as Hauschka, won the original score Oscar Sunday night for his music for the World War I epic 'All Quiet on the Western Front'. For this adaptation of the Erich Maria Remarque classic, Bertelmann used his great-grandmother’s turn-of-the-century harmonium, a pump organ whose carefully mic’d interior noises - “the breathing, the air, the wooden cracklings” sounded to him like “a war machine.” The song 'Naatu Naatu' by M.M. Keeravaani and Chandrabose from the hit Telugu-language film 'RRR' has made history by becoming the first Indian film song to win an Oscar, beating heavyweights like Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

Yolŋu rapper Baker Boy has dominated the 2022 Arias, taking home a total of five awards for his album 'Gela', including the top gong for album of the year, as well as best solo artist and best hip-hop release, ABC reports. Amyl and the Sniffers took home Best group, and Best rock release (for their 2021 album 'Comfort to Me'). Tones and I took home the fan-voted best song award for 'Cloudy Day'.

28-year-old rapper Little Simz has won the 2022 Mercury prize for her fourth album 'Sometime I Might be Introvert' last night, NME reports. “The album that we have chosen deals with themes both personal and political; the music is as sophisticated as it is varied. This is a truly exceptional album,” said DJ Jamz Supernova. Little Simz congratulated her fellow nominees: “All of you guys are incredible, we all made incredible albums, we all change people’s lives with our music and that’s the most important thing, so this is for us really, you know what I’m saying?”. The award, given to the best British or Irish album of the year, comes with a cash prize of £25,000. Simz is a DIY artist, self-releasing each of her albums on her own label, Age 101.

An American artist or an academic can't get nominated for MacArthur Fellows award, and the pool of candidates is a tightly-held secret. It's also a sweet cash prize. This year's 25 Fellows will each receive $800,000, a "no-strings-attached award to extraordinarily talented and creative individuals as an investment in their potential". This year's class of so-called 'geniuses' includes three musicians:

Ikue Mori of New York, N.Y., is an electronic music composer and performer "transforming the use of percussion in improvisation and expanding the boundaries of machine-based music.

Tomeka Reid of Chicago, Ill, is a jazz cellist and composer "forging a unique jazz sound that draws from a range of musical traditions and expanding the expressive possibilities of the cello in improvised music"
