Kylie Minogue sets UK chart records

Kylie Minogue has become the first female artist to have a number one album in the UK in five separate decades, next to boys such as Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Paul Weller and David Gilmour. Her new album, 'Disco', topped the charts with 55,000 sales, making for the best opening week of any new release in 2020 so far, the UK Official Charts reports. It is her eighth number one, meaning she has overtaken Elton John, Cliff Richard and George Michael in the all-time chart leaderboard. Minogue's chart-topper was made in the middle of the lockdown, with the star forced to buy recording equipment and learn computer software so she could record her vocals at home.

Ariana Grande has climbed the Billboard 200 chart for the fifth time with her latest release 'Positions', with 174,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 5. 'Positions' is Grande’s third No. 1 album in less than two years and three months -- the fastest accumulation of three No. 1 proper studio albums ever by a woman. Bruce Springsteen makes UK chart history

Bruce Springsteen scored his 12th Number 1 album on UK Official Chart with 'Letter To You', sold in 51,800 units. The entry means Springsteen is the first credited solo artist to have a Number 1 album in five consecutive decades, topping the charts in the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s. With 12 Number 1 albums, Bruce Springsteen is now tied with Madonna for chart-topping albums – Robbie Williams and Elvis Presley are the only solo artists to have had more Number 1 albums in the UK.

Republic Records claims the top three titles on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week, a first in two years, Billboard says. Taylor Swift’s 'Folklore' (released via Republic) climbs back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for an eighth non-consecutive week on top, with 77,000 equivalent album units. Total album sales for 'Folklore' jump past 1 million (to 1.038 million), making it the first album to sell a million copies in 2020, according to Billboard. Pop Smoke’s 'Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon' (via Victor Victor Worldwide/Republic) falls one spot with 66,000 equivalent album units earned. 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s 'Savage Mode II' (Boominati/Slaughter Boomin/Republic/Epic) dips 2-3 with 47,000 units (down 29%).

Fleetwood Mac‘s seminal 1977 album ‘Rumours’ has re-entered the top 10 of the Billboard 200 after 42 years thanks to a recent surge in popularity, due to viral video on TikTok, Billboard reports. The album jumped from #13 to #7 this week, following its newfound popularity after TikToker 420doggface208 posted his viral video of him longboarding while listening to ‘Dreams’, one of the songs from the album. ‘Rumours’ had originally spent a staggering 31 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 across 1977 and 1978, which remains a record for an album by a duo or a band. The top of the Billboard 200 this week is reserved for Pop Smoke’s 'Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon' who returns to No. 1 for a second week with 67,000 equivalent album units earned. For the first time in over two months, there are no debuts in the top 10.

Rapper 21 Savage and producer Metro Boomin land on top of the Billboard 200 chart with their third collaborative album, 'Savage Mode II', earning 171,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. last week, Billboard reports. K-pop girl quartet Blackpink enter Billboard's list at No. 2 with their debut full-length 'The Album', with 110,000 equivalent album units earned. On the other side of the ocean, Queen + Adam Lambert debut at Number 1 on the UK’s Official Albums Chart with a live collection 'Live Around The World'. It's Queen's first No. 1 album in 25 years. Blackpink are No. 2 in the UK as well.

Taylor Swift’s 'Folklore' returns to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week, collecting a seventh nonconsecutive week atop the tally with that album, Billboard reports. Swift’s total weeks at Billboard's No. 1 now stands at 47 across all seven of her chart-topping albums, so she surpasses Whitney Houston’s longstanding record, among women, for the most cumulative weeks at No. 1 - Houston’s tally stays at 46. The all-time record with the most weeks at No. 1 is held by The Beatles, with 132 weeks at No. 1 across 19 albums. The male act (and solo artist) with the most weeks atop the list is Elvis Presley, with 67.

Pop Smoke - first posthumous UK No. 1 this year

The posthumous debut album by US rapper Pop Smoke, 'Shoot For The Stars, Aim For The Moon' climbs to Number 1 on this week’s Official UK Albums Chart. It has become a norm for hip-hop albums to get the majority of the sales from streaming - 97% of Pop Smoke's charts sales figure this week came from streams (rock still clings to physical album sales). Pop Smoke, who died in February this year, becomes the first solo artist to land a posthumous Number 1 debut album in the UK – the only other act to have done so was Warrington band Viola Beach who topped the Official Albums Chart with their self-titled debut in 2016 (a few months after the complete band died in a car crash).
