Recently hired then fired American Recording Academy chief Deborah Dugan had filed a complaint against the organization stating that the nominating processes are fixed and accuses Grammy bosses of insider dealing and corruption. She says the board frequently nominates artists who aren't on the 20-deep list the Academy's members and expert committees propose for nomination, to reward "artists with whom they have personal or business relationships". Also, she says the Board manipulates the nominations process to ensure that certain songs or albums are nominated. Dugan's complaint in full here, the Variety took out the "highlights" from Dugan's complaint, where she states that:

  • Some board members on the “secret committees” represent or have relationships with nominated artists
  • The Board uses these committees as an opportunity to push forward artists with whom they have relationships
  • The Board manipulates the nominations process to ensure that certain songs or albums are nominated when the producer of the Grammys wants a particular song performed during the show
  • The Board is permitted to simply add in artists for nominations who did not even make the initial 20-artist list
  • The Board has selected artists who are under consideration for a nomination to sit on the committee that is voting for the category for which they have been nominated
