10 best world music albums
PopMatters has chosen "ten particularly phenomenal albums from across the globe", the ones where "artists ask their audience to leave behind insular worldviews and try to understand new perspectives". They chose Nigerian blues guitarist Mdou Moctar, Izraeli pop-trio A-WA, afro-pop by Ekiti Sound, tropical pop by The Garifuna Collective, Afro-Cuban singer Angélique Kidjo, Turkish rock and folk songs reworked by Altin Gün, Patagonian vocal trio Fémina, politically active Turkish rocker Umut Adan, Korean rapper Lil Kim, and Andean folktronica by producer Nicola Cruz. For the record, PM believes the term "world music" is still valid and does well in describing "cultural forms outside of a chosen mainstream". Some others have started using the term "global music".
