Nostalgia and indie-rock: Thoughts from after the Just Like Heaven festival
Stereogum has a great read (in a literal sense as well) about what indie rock means today, compared to 2009, since the last week's Just Like Heaven festival had just the perfect 2009-ish line up: Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, Beach House, Grizzly Bear, The Rapture etc. "Just Like Heaven didn’t have to acknowledge any of the major shifts that have occurred in indie music and culture in the new decade — no rap, no R&B — not even PBR&B — no EDM, no country, no emo, nothing with even the faintest hint of politics. From a purely objective business viewpoint, this was Just Like Heaven’s greatest marketing point — it’s incredibly rare for a festival of this nature to have such a fully-formed identity, even if that identity is 'washed 30-something indie music fan'" - Stereogum's Ian Cohen states.
