National's Bryce Dessner: Everything you think is permanent can be erased
A great read in the Guardian - part-biography, part-interview with the National, starting point being their Paris concert held on the very same evening the Notre-Dame burned. Multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Bryce Dessner, a Parisian now, was having second thoughts about playing (they did), and later concluded - “When so many institutions are crumbling, basic concepts of liberalism, it’s like everything you think is permanent can be erased.” On this special tour they visit Paris, London, New York City, Toronto, and Los Angeles, promoting their new album 'I Am Easy to Find' (out 17 May), that comes together with a short movie, directed by Mike Mills, a portrayal of a woman from baby to grandma. Mills' son Hopper, a 7-year old, found a new friend in the National's frontman Matt Berninger, who was there while filming the video for 'Hairpin Turns', and was encouraging his new-found bearded buddy: “Matt! You look really good … cos I can’t see your face!”.
