Lazarus - busker from Malawi fighting for albino people
BBC has a lovely article about a busker Lazarus from Malawian city of Lilongwe who, by pure luck, made his first album. He was filmed with a phone by an English tourist in Lilongwe, and that recording made it's way to Johan Hugo, a Swedish-born, London-based musician who found Lazarus through an acquaintance. A makeshift recording studio was set up in an AirB&B complex in Lilongwe, with additional recording taking place in the streets where Lazarus first learned to play - "We did it right in front of his house," Hugo recalls. "There were 100 kids and people singing along and clapping and doing the washing and cooking - so it's like the song gets flavoured by the surrounding area." His new single 'Ndife Alendo' is out now (listen to it here), and a documentary 'Lazarus' will premiere at Tribeca Film Festival. The album, 'Stomp On The Devil', will feature tracks that blend Lazarus' traditional Malawian style with modern folk. The song through which Lazarus and Hugo found one another was 'Stomp on the Devil' - a message to Satan that "no matter how miserable you try to make me, I will survive", BBC reports.
